10.9.4 Absorption
 Visible light occupies the electromagnetic spectrum between approximately 400 nm (violet) and 700 nm (red). The absorption rate of water varies depending upon the wavelength (Figure 10.34). The ends of the spectrum (the red and the violet ends) are absorbed first, with the maximum pene- tration/lowest absorption rate in the blue/green spectrum.
Maximum penetration is gained when no particulate matter is suspended in the water (which would cause scattering), such as in the warm tropical waters of the Pacific. As a result, the red
