In this chapter, we cover what are best described as “housekeeping” items integral to the vehicle. These vehicle subsystems are sensors needed for basic navigation of the vehicle along with health monitoring of the subsystems for a fully operational vehicle system. As part of the camera package (i.e., the visual sensor), lighting will also be examined as the purpose of lighting is to maximize the effectiveness of the optical sensor package.
11.1 Vehicle sensors
Sensor packages aboard an ROV system are broadly divided into survey sensors and vehicle sen- sors. The survey sensor and the vehicle sensor may be the exact same item (e.g., pressure trans- ducer depth gauge, an integrated fiber optic gyro), but the two are separated by responsibility. Vehicle sensors are the responsibility of the ROV team while the survey sensors are for the survey team. The ROV team typically gives the survey team a fiber and a power plug (and a data feed on
