13.4.6 Protocol converters
Many times, the computer running the sensor software does not have a compatible adapting device as most modern computers are sold with USB ports only. In order to adapt to some industry stan- dard sensors, some type of protocol converter must be adapted. For instance, the typical sonar sys- tem used with an ROV will transmit any of several protocols (RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, or Ethernet). In order to capture these into the surface computer, a protocol converter is required to convert between the serial standards (Figure 13.37).
The wiring on these converters must be closely examined as the various configurations of the peripheral equipment will determine the device’s wiring.
