In Figure 20.19, both a skid-mounted 5000 psi (345 bar) water blaster pump (a) as well as a surface-supplied air cavitation pump (b) are depicted. These are used to clean sediment and marine growth from subsea structures for sealing, cathodic protection, and inspection purposes.
The traditional cleaning agent has been high-pressure water for cleaning marine growth on fragile sealing surfaces, such as wellheads and painted surfaces. However, recent advances in air cavitation cleaning technology have allowed air blasting to augment water abrasion. The advantage to the ROV
