4789 voyages to the Cape and Asia. Two thirds of these passages took place in the eigh teenth century; of the 3401 return voyages an even more predominant part took place in this century. In tonnages too the accent is on the eighteenth century. Smaller types of ship were used much less and particularly after 1740 the average tonnage of East Indiamen increased. This intensification and increase in scale of traffic between the Republic and Asia were accompanied by an increasing demand for seafaring and other personnel.
12 According to Sutton, Lords of the East, 162-168, by the end of 1794 the East India Company had chartered a total of 955 ships, which had made about 2600 voyages (2,198 to end 1774). A survey of European voyages to Asia in the seventeenth century in N.S. Steensgaard, 'European shipping to Asia', 9.
