Appendix I: SEAFARING PERSONNEL: COMPOSITION AND RATES OF PAY
In 1650 the Heren Zeventien compiled a Reglement which the chambers were to observe in paying the wages of crews on the ships they sent out. This Reglement, printed in Van Dam, Beschryvinge, vol. 63, p. 557-558, was from then on subject to repeated amendments. In 1692 the directors had it printed: Reglement op Ί aannemen en gagieren van 7 volk na Oost-Indien, te weten Zeevarenden en Militairen, dated 1st November 1692 (VOC 31).
On the basis of these data and the records of Nicolaus de Graeff (Oost-Indise Spiegel, 56-57), Boxer compiled a list of VOC rates of pay which he incorporated as an appendix
in his 'Dutch Seaborne Empire' (301-302). The list below deviates in some points from Boxer's data. Apart from the sources already quoted, this list is based on the Calculatie, wat de Equipage van een fluit van 170 à 180 lasten zou komen te kosten (in res. Heren 17 25. 11.1636, VOC 101), the Uytrekeninge van hetgeen de zeelieden de Comp, maandelijks kosten (in ARA, coll. Hudde, 21) and the revision of the Reglement by the Heren Zeventien of 1662 (res. of 30th March 1662 in VOC 151).
The differences with Boxer's data occur particularly in the salaries of master and first mate, which can be given here in greater detail based on the last mentioned sources.
