With the exception of shipping from Batavia in the latter part of the eighteenth century, only the months of October to March were actually used for departures home. For Ceylon, Bengal and China this was selfevident because of the northeast monsoon. Yet in reading tables 16a - 16c it becomes clear that the 1742 directive was of great positive importance for the duration of the voyage from Batavia at least. It took significantly less time to reach the Cape in October or November than in January or February. A n average shortening of the journey resulted from this shift in policy. On the other routes the effect is less obvious.
