is not identified. The man with his back to us, petting the dog and pointing, is said to be Daniel Jenckes, father of John. As a Rhode Island judge, Daniel Jenckes helped cover up the involvement of fellow merchants in burning of HMS Gaspee in 1772.
To the right, Nicholas Power of Providence
is giving a dancing lesson to young Godfrey Malbone of Newport. John Jenckes, who probably commissioned the painting from John Greenwood, is in the right background holding
a candle to light the way of the artist himself, who has overindulged and is vomiting. The card players on the left are not identified (the one in the yellowish coat appears to be cheating). Neither is the man drinking from his punch bowl and his companion, who is tipping the punch into the other man’s lap. The man in all gray
and wearing a night cap is said to be a
Dutch merchant.
