north and south and on both sides of the ocean, and he excels at working one-on-one and in small groups to get things done.
Effective communications is at the heart of Pless’s aims for the 2019-2022 Triennium. “We have an important mission to preserve the memory of the Revolution,” he says, “and we’ve organized our work around the new American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati to do it. This change has come fast, as this Society goes, and all our members don’t yet understand what the Institute is all about, or even that the ARI is the mission-related arm of the Society—that the ARI is simply the Society, working to achieve a very public mission.” Within a year he aims to change that, and ensure that every member understands what the ARI is all about, and where it’s going. But
that’s just the start. To be effective, the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati has to become a recognized proponent of the memory of the American Revolution. That’s the bigger task of this Triennium.
The same roll-up-your-sleeves approach that characterized Pless’s work on the 2007 Triennial has characterized every stage of his work with the General Society. He knows every member of the Society’s staff because he’s cultivated relationships with them. He works seamlessly with our executive director because they’ve been working together continuously for the last ten years. And when the pressure is on at Anderson House, he can be found with a hammer helping to install new exhibitions, hauling supplies for General Society weekends . . . and solving problems.
“I am looking forward to making the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati an unqualified success,” Pless says, “and that will happen when we have effectively recruited the members of the Society fully and completely to our shared cause. Together the members of this organization can do extraordinary things.
Our members won the American Revolution. Now they will ensure the memory of that vast event is cherished by our fellow Americans.”
