I have served on the Mobile City Council.
I currently serve as chairman of the boards of the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the Alabama Department of Archives and History, which preserves and operates the state’s archives and history museum. I also serve on the board of a non-profit hospital system.
What are your thoughts about popular understanding and appreciation of the American Revolution today? If it isn’t properly understood or sufficiently appreciated, is that the most compelling case for the American Revolution Institute?
When I was a child there were two things
hung over the blackboard at the front of my classroom: the U.S. flag and a picture of George Washington. Today Washington is gone, and in many schools so is the flag. That’s it in a nutshell. Because the American Revolution is not adequately taught in schools, our countrymen have a poor understanding of how a small number of men led a divided country and weak central government to a victory that achieved

our independence and lit a fire for representative government that swept the world. People have no conception of how tenuous that victory was,
how difficult it was to achieve, the sacrifices and sufferings of those who achieved it and what that victory means today. Our task, through the American Revolution Institute, is to educate Americans, remind them what was achieved in the American Revolution, and what it means today. Only by adhering to the principles of the American Revolution can we hope to preserve the freedom we enjoy.
What do you hope the Society and the American Revolution Institute accomplish during your time in office?
We must change the way American history
is taught in public schools. This isn’t just an academic exercise, it is critical to the survival of representative government and individual rights. To accomplish this, we must change the requirements so that more time and attention is devoted to the American Revolution and what it accomplished. Achieving this will not be easy and will not happen overnight. It will require dedication, perseverance and above all patience and long term commitment—the exact qualities exhibited by our propositi.
