On November 13, 1967, five days after his death from wounds sustained in valorous combat, Lt. Robert Charles Lawrence Fergusson was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross “for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam.” The Distinguished Service Cross is second only to the Medal of Honor as the highest award that can be given a member of the United States Army for extreme gallantry and risk of life in combat.
