A day on or around Montague Island gives you a different perspective on the unspoilt Eurobodalla coastline and also that sense of being somewhere special, a place outside of your life experiences. Montague draws nature to it in a remarkable way and you can see it up close on a guided tour out of Narooma.
A large colony of mostly male fur seals will be the rst to greet your boat as the captain steers you into the small harbour. Divers and snorkellers will delight in their playfulness and leave with video and photos to impress friends and family.
The rounded grey and orange granite of Montague is home to thousands of pairs of nesting Little Penguins, Crested Terns, Silver Gulls and Shearwaters. Whales seem to use the island as
a punctuation point during their regular travels. Spotting them is just about guaranteed during the spring migration season.
The history of Montague adds to its lure – a mix of Aboriginal and European cultures. Known as ‘Barranguba’ in Yuin language, the island and its place off the coast is part of a storyline that connects to Mount Gulaga on the mainland.
European history is more obvious. The restored lighthouse and light-keeper cottages are popular overnight stays.
Guided tours and accommodation options are available from the Narooma Visitor Centre.
