Bending Bamboo puts Second Language Acquisition to work! From in-class activities to outside-of-
class tasks, students are equipped
to apply new knowledge and
skills at school and in community life. Their inter-cultural curiosity, communicative competence, integrative confidence, and collaborative spirit can build a bridge from their school-age learning to an adulthood of satisfying work, health, and prosperity.
Teachers are critical stakeholders
in the mission to be “bilingual
with purpose to grow the future
of Vietnam.” Bending Bamboo encourages them to build on
their own success as professional educators. Through a two-year process of ongoing workshops, forums and resources, Bending Bamboo unites the best efforts of partners in education and development—peer teachers, administrators, officials, employers, parents, and international educators. Bending Bamboo also equips teachers to monitor and evaluate their work—they gather
data at every step to assess student
progress and ensure they receive the highest quality education possible— excellent texts and lesson plans, inter- connected global classrooms, and model schools.
Finally, teachers and students can grow the future of Vietnam by fostering lifestyle norms that are sustainable, inclusive, resilient, and equitable. It is not enough to learn words and write essays about the environment or climate change
or public health. Rather, genuine learning leads to action. It requires critical thought, team effort, and a willingness to take risks.
