OVERVIEW
Identity is the basis of a purposeful communicative approach to Second Language Acquisition. Knowing one’s place and role in a family, community, region, country, and world prepares teenagers to
build relations, interdependence, perspective, and responsible behavior in society. In this chapter, Grade 10 students engage topics
of name, lineage, individuality,
and collective identity. This initial chapter explains activities, tasks, norms, and global classroom/
movie offerings that recur in every chapter and grade level. By Grade 11, students are challenged to discern a deeper understanding
of relationships, dependence vs. interdependence, and one’s value in community. Then in Grade 12, even as students prepare for their high school exit exams, they are asked to contemplate a future—moving from their teens to adulthood, gaining perspective (gender, location, epoch), and contributing to a humane society.
