Family Tree
Step One. Interview your parents and grandparents to complete a Family Tree of five generations. Don’t give up until you and your family have helped you identify your sixteen great-great-grandparents.
Step Two. Freewrite for five minutes. Write down impressions that immediately come to mind as you look at the names and consider the origins of your ancestors.
Step Three. Consider the Topic Sentence as an “umbrella” that:
1. Covers the topic for an entire paragraph.
2. Covers the content of the paragraph.
3. Unifies the content and organizes the sequence of
sentences.
4. Supports the overall thesis of the essay if this paragraph is part of an essay.
Step Four: Organize your thoughts for a one-paragraph TBER passage of 100 to 120 words:
T = Topic Sentence (as in the “umbrella” example above).
B = Bridge sentence that provides context and/or concept from the Topic Sentence.
E = Example sentences (three) of factual, narrative, detailed support for the Topic Sentence.
R = Restatement of your point, going a step further than just repeating the Topic Sentence.
