Reading a Graph
The Cần Thơ 100 RC PRA introduces a matrix quadrant (four-part) graph with vertical and horizontal axes.
Reading a Graph for Understanding: Let’s look at a graph that shows how shock and stress affect Cần Thơ. To understand the graph, we must know more words and understand a matrix quadrant graph. It has a vertical and horizontal line.
Frequency: waves are far apart so they hit the shore slowly.
Severity: waves are gentle and not so strong.
Frequency:
waves are closer together Severity: waves are stronger
Frequency: waves are altogether hitting land faster and faster Severity: strong and destructive.
Axis Vertical axis Horizontal axis
The graph plots frequency (how often or likely) against severity (how strong). Think about waves of the ocean.
Interpreting a Graph
In small groups, study this matrix quadrant graph. Describe in Vietnamese and English what you observe. Write down in English your conclusions. What are the orange boxes? The blue boxes?
High frequency
Lack of public green space
Flooding
Downgraded Infrastructure
Poverty
Disease outbreaks
Water storage
Crime & violence
Low frequency
Erosion
Environmental pollution
Saline intrusion
Earthquakes
Economic recess
Unemployment
Waste
Heatwaves
Macro- economic shifts
Food storage
Low severity
Immagrants
High tide
Power outages
Lack of afford- able housing
High severity
Storms, tornados
PRA Figure of the current shocks and stresses in Cần Thơ City (p. 50 of the PRA); orange boxes are shocks, and blue boxes are stresses
