Step Four. Share. As a class, imagine other products that can be made by reusing, reclaiming, rethinking, redesigning, and revaluing an item of waste that otherwise adds to your carbon footprint. Again, as a class, imagine and describe concretely other reclaimed products that could be made in the Delta, and become part of ecotourism.
Step Five. Freewrite for ten minutes. Again, freewriting is done spontaneously without worry about spelling and grammar. Respond to this question: “How is this Gambian story similar to Vietnamese experience with plastic bags and straws?”

Soiree
Far underground, the lights of the City of Ember are flickering – they are turning off and on indicating that
the source of electricity for the city is unstable. For many generations, the people of Ember have organized and enjoyed life, but now the city’s powerful generator is failing.
Who built this city and why? The story of the city’s origin has been lost through the generations. Two teenagers search for answers and a way to help all the people escape a future in darkness.
Step One. Watch the film and/or read the graphic novel found on Bending Bamboo website:
Members → Teacher Repository → Integration → Grade 11 → Chapter 2
Find .pdf materials and links for other websites with information about the author, scientific information and experiments, more information about living underground, maps, writing secret messages and more.
Step Two. For class or soiree discussion, address these questions:
In City of Ember, many generations of people have lived underground. Describe their city.
1. Why does Ember exist? Who built it?
2. Why are the lights of Ember flickering? Why are they
turning on and off?
3. Did the founders of Ember have a plan for escape?
4. Describe Lina and Doon. Why do they search for answers,
whereas other youth do not?
5. There are four more books in this series of Ember stories.
What do you think will happen next?
