Using the: Used before a noun to show a particular person, place, animal or thing, a speaker uses the when the speaker and listener or writer and reader have the same person or thing in mind. When the is used, it shows that a noun is specific.

Pronouns + “be”
We know these pronouns with the verb “to be.” In this pattern, the pronouns are used as subjects of a sentence.
a) Where are you? I am in the kitchen.
(b) The sky is beautiful tonight. The moon is full, and the stars are twinkling.
(c) Are you hungry? Do you want some fruit from
basket? I’d like the apple. Thank you.
In (a), both speaker and the listener have one kitchen in mind.
In (b), there is one sky, one moon, and one set of stars that we see from earth. So, when the speaker speaks of the sky, moon and stars, the listener knows what the speaker is talking about.
In (c), both speaker and listener see one apple. Both understand which apple.
