Step One. Write two or three sentences that both translate and explain the significance of the proverb.
1. ___________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ 2. ___________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________
Step Two. Does your family’s origin and current location (countryside, city, or in-between) shape your translation and explanation? Freewrite for five minutes on the importance of “location” in forming one’s perspective.
Step Three. This is your fifth brief written assignment on perspective. Pull your thoughts together now and write a 150-word short essay on perspective based on the TBER format. Keep these goals in mind:
1. Your Topic Sentence should make an argument (for example, cause and effect) and not merely describe a situation.
2. Your Bridge should define any “key words” that you rely upon in your argument. It should also give context so that your reader or audience knows the basis of your perspective.
3. Your Examples should each clearly relate to and support your Topic Sentence.
4. Your Restatement should go beyond mere summary. Explain what you have learned about perspective. Pose a question. Engage your reader or audience in the relevance of your writing.
Step Four. Square up. Read your paragraph to three classmates. Invite their questions. Provide clear answers. You are “bilingual with purpose” as you discourse on this important topic in terms of age, gender, and location shaping perspective.
Step Five. Share. This time arrange to share the best essays from your class with another global classroom of peers. Hear each other out. Ask good follow-up questions. Enjoy your discourse.

Step One. Log out-of-class time that you spend working— reading, listening, writing, speaking—on Second Language Acquisition (SLA) to be “bilingual with purpose” with a range of people in the chart below.
Step Two. Take three minutes to add to your list of reasons why being “bilingual with purpose” matters in your life.
You began this list in Chapter 10 and augmented it in Chapter 11. Now write down more reasons—fifteen in all—in complete sentences.
1. ___________________________________________________ 2. ___________________________________________________ 3. ___________________________________________________ 4. ___________________________________________________ 5. ___________________________________________________ 6. ___________________________________________________ 7. ___________________________________________________ 8. ___________________________________________________ 9. ___________________________________________________ 10. ___________________________________________________ 11. ___________________________________________________ 12. ___________________________________________________ 13. ___________________________________________________ 14. ___________________________________________________ 15. ___________________________________________________
