 Randy Olson
Randy Olson is a photographer in the documentary tradition. His more than 30 National Geographic projects have taken him to almost every continent and for the last 10 years, Olson has concentrated on population issues, resource issues, and disappearing cultures.
Olson earned an Alicia Patterson Fellowship and a Robert F. Kennedy award. He has received numerous awards, including Magazine Photographer of the Year and Newspaper Photographer of the Year – one of only two photographers to win in both media.
Olson is the founder of The Photo Society, a non-profit for National Geographic photographers with a goal to preserve thousands of their images through an online archive. His grant from the National Archives saved the Pictures of the Year collection. Olson is married to fellow photographer Melissa Farlow, with whom he frequently collaborates. They live in western Pennsylvania and Oregon.
“Although my stories focus on complex issues, my goal is to make images that contribute to and further the conversation. My hope if that you will look into someone’s eyes and understand who they are ... what they are feeling and thinking.”
