RESCUE BREATHING
Rescue Breathing is the breathing component of CPR and involves using expired air from the rescuer to provide oxygen to the casualty’s lungs.
Normal effective breathing is essential to maintaining life. A person who is gasping or breathing abnormally and is unresponsive require immediate resuscitation.
Agonal gasps (abnormal
gasping for air) are common in
a casualty that has suffered a
sudden cardiac arrest. The first
Responder will identify the
need for resuscitation by the
absence of normal breathing
and the lack of responsiveness as a key indicator to commence CPR. CPR is to be delivered commencing with 30 compressions followed by two Rescue Breaths. Where the rescuer is unable or unwilling to provide Rescue Breaths to the casualty compression only CPR may be provided (CPR without the breaths).
