Throughout his career, some of Tagliapietra’s inspiration has come from his experiences both of
the beautiful landscapes of his native Italy and his appreciation of visual culture worldwide. This show includes a relatively recent (2017) and brilliantly colored example of his ‘Stromboli’
series, inspired by the Sicilian island and its volcano that
both bear the same name. The almost rectangular form of this wide-necked vessel serves as a perfect canvas for an abstracted explosion of yellow and red flames, represented by a mass of ascending lines – tiny threads of glass that reach up into a field of blue and black punctuated with red. A close look reveals
an intricate composition of vividly-colored murrine, each one containing multiple hues. The shape of this vessel may not echo the conical form of Mt. Stromboli, but the brilliant eruption of color is surely a deliberate allusion to one of Italy’s three active volcanoes.
