In contrast, a 2008 example from the Masai series of installations eschews bright colors in a combination of seven sharply-elongated elements. Inspired by the shields used by the Masai peoples
of Kenya and Tanzania, these long narrow forms are always presented by Tagliapietra in groups, whether installed on the wall, hung as a chandelier or assembled into the striking form of a freestanding sculpture. Here, narrow stripes of black are alternately revealed and concealed by cold-working
over the pieces’ entire surfaces. Shadows of both the black
cane lines and the ridges carved through the cold-working process contribute to the work’s mesmerizing presence.
