Like the Masai shield forms, pieces in Tagliapietra’s Giudecca series are conceived
of installations consisting of a group of pieces whose relationships have been carefully calibrated throughout the entire making process. In the Giudecca installation from 2013 presented here, five pieces feature combinations of cold-working and complicated and exquisite interpolations of black cane into clear glass.
The shifting, optically-dizzying patterns in and on each one alternate between transparency and translucency when the works are observed from all sides. The initial impression of simplicity is deceptive, gradually giving way to an appreciation of the extraordinary compositional skill that has gone into creating not only
the individual pieces but their kaleidoscopic relationships.
