Ombelico (2015), a freestanding sculpture shown here on a low tabletop stand, embodies the playfulness that sometimes surfaces in Tagliapietra’s work.
Like his other descriptive titles
– Tulip, Spirale, Dinosaur – this word, which means navel in Italian, aptly encapsulates an important aspect of the piece: the small
hole at the center of a gorgeous spiral of several shades of blue interpolated with delicate lines of yellow. Still, this mesmerizing work also commands us to consider
the possibility that, like all of the Maestro’s pieces, it could have multiple meanings.
Rather than being the end of interpretation, this title could
be the beginning, allowing us to consider this piece in different ways every time we look at it. This Ombelico could be the center
of a world: a home, a heart, the contemplation of which is a source of endless pleasure. As always, Maestro Tagliapietra wants us to find our own meaning, imagining something for ourselves, as we contemplate the colorful depths of his extraordinary works of art.
