Each work demonstrates
a subtle combination of knowledge and artistry, acquired over decades of near-daily work. The majority showcase Tagliapietra’s exquisite murrine1 – the cross-sections cut from handmade colored glass rods that he has created for most of his work. Also present is his extraordinarily skillful shaping of each piece throughout
the blowing process, and
his forethought in designing finishes that may include intricate coldworking2. As always, there is an overall consistency of vision, as well as the usual demonstration that, alongside glass, his medium is color.
1 Murrine are patterns or images made by combining different colors of glass and pulling them out in to a long thread or cane, then cutting the cane into thin cross sections.
2Cold working involves changing the surface or texture of the blown glass, using processes that don’t require heat, such as grinding or sandblasting.
