The willow family includes a number of different species of trees and shrubs native to Europe, Asia, and some parts of North America.
Some of the more commonly known species are white willow/European willow (Salix alba), black willow/pussy willow (Salix nigra), crack willow (Salix fragilis), purple willow (Salix purpurea), and weeping willow (Salix babylonica).
Not all willow species accumulate a therapeutically sufficient amount of salicin.
Healing -
Willow bark is used to ease pain and reduce inflammation.
Studies have shown that willow bark has antioxidants, fever-reducing, antiseptic and immune-boosting properties.
Some studies show willow is as effective as aspirin for reducing pain and inflammation at a much lower dose.
Magick -
The Willow is the tree most associated with the moon, water, the Goddess and all that is feminine. It is the tree of dreaming, intuition and deep emotions. Symbolically it belongs to the beginning of spring, when all of life is stirring in the depths and begins to shoot outwards once again.
Willow leaves are carried or used in mixtures to attract love.
All parts of the Willow protect against evil and can be carried or placed in the home for this purpose. If you wish to conjure spirits burn Willow Bark & Sandalwood during the Waning Moon outdoors.
The leaves, bark & wood of the Willow are also utilized in healing spells.
