BUSINESS NZ UPDATE
BCA POLICY MANAGER ANNA CLEARY UPDATES US ON THE LATEST FROM BUSINESS NZ.
As an Associate Industry Group (AIG) member of Business NZ, the BCA gets sneak peeks into the likely direction of future legislation and policy direction a ecting corporate New Zealand. Here are the highlights from the latest AIG meeting in early August.
Dr David Prentice, Chair of the Government’s independent Interim Climate Change Committee (ICCC) outlined the ICCC’s role, scope and focus. e ICCC has been asked by Government to solve two problems:
1. Howsurrenderobligationscouldbest be arranged if agricultural methane and nitrous oxide emissions enter into the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme.
2. Planning for the transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2035.
e two problems set before the ICCC have a relatively narrow focus – the rst revolves around agriculture and the sec- ond around electricity supply. We think this means the ICCC scope could expand to include other factors, such as transport emissions and the emissions caused by the electricity industry. e BCA will be keep- ing a watchful eye on this space.
Business NZ Chief Executive Kirk Hope and his team provided an update on the progress of various pieces of contentious employment legislation. e Employment Relations Act Bill – which BCA submit- ted on earlier this year – was one of those covered. is Bill is expected to be reported back to select committee on 7 September 2018. e Triangular Relationships Bill – which seeks to align contractor and employee conditions – has been delayed
