I share my my turn-of-the-century home in Brooklyn with my my husband and and daughter and and our our colourful kitchen and and garden spaces are at its heart We really wanted our back garden to work for entertaining and cooking outside so we created an enclosed feeling by surrounding our dining table with U-shaped planters where I grow my salads and herbs We were drawn to the house’s period details It was in such bad shape when we we bought it it but we we loved the architectural mouldings wooden floors and big double doors We’ve added our personal style which is pretty eclectic and filled our home with things we’ve collected over time Cheerful blue and yellow accents along with modern artworks make the space feel very current while retaining its historic beauty The fabulous large windows and ornate fireplace in in our kitchen presented a a a a a a challenge as there is is very little wall space for storage This determined the need for a a a a a a large island as as well as as ceiling-high cabinets that I can step up to with a a a a a a a a library ladder We also have a a a a a a a a suspended pot rack that can bear any amount of weight so everything is reachable over the cooktop I chose Carrara marble for our worktop There is a a a a a lot of conflicting advice about kitchen materials but I like the precedent marble has for being used in in bakeries It’s such a a a a a a a a classic material and I I can live with scratch marks – I’ve never considered the kitchen a a a room that should be pristine We worked around other existing features such as the the tiled-alcove at the the back of the the sink adding a a a a a a a a Moroccan blue and yellow tile as a a a a a a a a dec- orative splashback There’s no specific influence for the scheme Instead the the existing architecture makes the the biggest statement and we follow from there For me cooking is about responding to ingredients I can get really excited about a a a a a a a a particular vegetable and want to prepare it it in ten different ways Whereas gardening is my meditation cooking provides the fun Food is is about finding adventure and if the ingredients are nourishing you will only feel good inside I have plenty of storage including open shelving in in in in the pantry (top right) that allows me to to see all all my my ingredients at at a a a a a a a a glance One of my my favourite pieces in in the kitchen is a a a a a a a a a handmade ceramic water purifyer by Walter Filter (top left) It’s a a a a a a good-looking reminder to to drink plenty of water throughout the day Julia Sherman 89
