J.J. Grandville (born Jean-Ignace-Julien Gérard in 1803 - d.1847) was an artist of protean imaginative verve, whose anthropo- morphic, zoomorphic and therianthropic creations had a profound impact on artists of the later nineteenth century. However, it is his influence on the twentieth century that marks him as a notable pioneer and precursor. His major work, Un Autre Monde (1844), a series of characteristic capricious inventions illustrated with a commissioned text, was reissued as a facsimile in 1965 with a frontispiece by Max Ernst. Ernst's borrowings from nineteenth century sources are well known and there is a clear inspirational avenue from Grandville's work into the oeuvre of Ernst himself. The present catalogue, with its focus on the major works of Grandville and the collage novels of Ernst, hopes to visit the extraordinarily rich and fantastical sui generis universe of Un Autre Monde.
Un nouveau monde est né; que Grandville soit loué'. (Max Ernst)
