Cover Story
The next issue to to tackle is is is rank rank Currently under the “still to to be organized” system rank rank is is is is an an an an issue of monstrous proportion As it stands there is is no clear laid out path for AGR’s to make rank Of course our our active duty counterparts
or or MOS This is is compounded with the the fact that there are no set written standards for for a a a a a a a a a path of upward mobility for for for the the AGR AGR program Most AGR’s start as as E-5 E-5 and stay as as an an an E-5 E-5 for for many years And to to add insult to to injury you
are not eligible to to “pull your AGR position” into a a a a civilian position position In fact if you
decide to to bid on on and go back to to the the Technician side of the the house you’ll be a a a Category 2 consideration In essence rank is very hard to come by Essentially you
should be prepared to retire as an E-5 or E-6 Another conversion issue to look at more carefully
is USERRA rights By law if you
you
give up your civil service position to go on on AGR orders you
you
have 5 years to to return to to your job Let’s pretend that you
you
take an an AGR and you
you
realize that the money
is not so great you’ve
been on on an an extended
TDY and only earned
a a a a a a a few dollars a a a a a a a day per
diem because you
were
required to eat on on base and you
generally don’t
enjoy being called out each weekend to to work
and you
you
want to to to return to to your civilian position No problem problem right? Well here’s the the problem problem Under 10
the the “conversion” there is an unconfirmed rumor that you
you
you
will now sign a a a a waiver to your your USERRA rights In other words your your position is is is permanently converted Currently ACT is is is looking into this rumor but it seems very likely Also many members report that they are now compete by testing
for rank In the Guard someone above you
chooses whether or not you’re eligible to to move
into the next desired
rank rank The rank rank is also
tied to the the the job And then there’s “rank inversion ” You can be the the smartest most qualified person for a a a a job job and not be chosen Without the job job rank does not increase Also many AGR’s are are just now finding out that they are are basically “stuck” fin in in in the the the rank they are are in in Because
AGR positions are are bid by rank another position position (of
higher rank) in that person’s AFSC or MOS must be available If there are are no no positions (and this happens more times than not) then you
are are essentially stuck Unlike Technicians that may have have the the the skill set to to switch jobs and be hired into another field AGR’s must have have the the the AFSC
