The JWN Foundation started in 2017 with the vision of making it the most impactful year yet, and by all assessments, the vision was realized.
Focusing on its main pillars of Education, Culture and Social Inclusion, the JWN Foundation hosted a number of activities and launched several programmes aimed at making an impact in those spheres.
The 2017 activities primarily concentrated on youth. In March, over 280 students from the JWNF’s adopted primary schools in Kingston- Balmagie, Seaview Gardens and Seaward Primary schools, were treated to a historic train ride as a post GSAT treat. For most of the children and some of the teachers, this was a novel experience and a unique opportunity to view Jamaica’s beautiful landscape from a mode of transportation that had long before ceased passenger commuting operations in Jamaica.
Another exciting initiative of the JWN Foundation in 2017, was the musical session ‘Expressions Through the Arts’ with international percussion-

ist Jody Linscott and the drummers of the Seaview Gardens Primary. It was a lively and rhythmic hour of cultural exchange with Linscott sharing percussion styles from her experience in the world music scene while the Seaview Gardens drummers educated her on Jamaican beats. ‘Expressions Through the Arts’ culminated with a donation of musical equipment to the Seaview Gardens Primary drum corps.
The JWNF’s activities then rolled on to the first ‘EmPOWERment Tour’, a series of motivational workshops featuring five-time world champion boxer, Alicia ‘Slick’ Ashley. Alicia participated in a series of self-defense and motivational workshops in Kings- ton and St. Elizabeth. Women from the Inner-City in Kingston and the graduating class of Roger Clarke High were taught self-defense techniques as well as given a motivational talk geared at empowering them, not only with physical skills but also the mental ability to overcome challenges.
Education also got additional focus from the JWNF with the revamping of the company’s scholarship
