BUILDING A HERD
Kaye says that at the outset, Dan knew nothing about who nicked with whom and who was who in the Quarter Horse industry, so he studied magazines, read books and followed the races. “He’s had tunnel vision since then,” she says. “He learned a lot from studying and from people in the industry, including the importance of mares in a runner’s ability.”
In the 1990s, Dan and Kaye were at a sale looking at a Game Plan mare by Easy Jet when the mare’s owner, Jerry Lawley, told Dan of another Game Plan mare he had with more
on her bottom side, so they bought the 1985 Appaloosa mare Pretty Perfect, by Quarter Horse sire Game Plan, and out of Appaloosa mare Perfect One by Quarter Horse sire Ichibon.
Perfect One was inducted into the Appaloosa Horse Club Hall of Fame in 2010. Pretty
Perfect produced 1990 mare Sail On Perfect, whose first foal was First Touch Down by First Down Dash son First Weapon. First Touch Down earned $7,594 with one win, two seconds and five thirds from 17 outs.
Matt Whitekiller talked them into buying their great Texas Hero Paint mare Elaina Go Go, their highest-priced mare at that time, as a yearling in 2005. She remains a part of their broodmare
band along with her daughter Go Go Maserati; their homebred mare PRP Sedona Sunset (dam
of 2018 World Champion, Champion 2 Year Old, Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding and # 1 Honor Roll Gelding Live Moonshine);
Ze Southern Girl (dam of 2019 World Champion, Champion 2 Year Old, Champion 2 Year-Old Gelding and # 1 Honor Roll Gelding Southern Electric); Judys Apollo (dam of 2-time 2017 Champion, 2-time 2018
Champion, and 2-time 2019 Champion Bully Pulpit); and Lindys Sign and Shiny Sign, both
2015 daughters of Second Painted Sign.

FAMILY TIME
After they sold the Lewisville car dealership, Dan and Kaye moved to Kemp, Texas, where they keep some of their mares and babies and have run Sandy Shores RV Park and Marina for the past 20 years.
“We approached the RV park like we do most other things,” Kaye says, “— we’ve made it our family. We’ve got good people and we’ve enjoyed it; it’s been a lot of fun.”
Although they’ve moved most of their foaling operation to James Ranch in Wayne, Oklahoma, and Sallisaw, Oklahoma, where Matt Whitekiller trains their runners, Kaye
still does the morning feeding at their Texas operation. “It’s let me keep my eyes and my hands on them to make sure everything’s okay,” she says. “Having the horses has been great therapy for us. Each one knows their name and gets talked to and petted every day.”
In their “off time,” if there is such a thing
in their world, they go to the horse races at Remington Park, Fair Meadows and Will Rogers Downs. “That’s what we enjoy, and we love spending time with our families: my brothers and our kids, Kim, Brandi and Tammy; our sons-in-law and grandkids.”
