After three consecutive runner-up finishes in stakes races, The Cazador got back to the winner’s circle on Dec. 19, prevailing in the $30,000 Scoopies Leaving You Stakes at Evangeline Downs.
Coming back after a layoff of about two months following a second place run in the Lakeview Dash, The Cazador was the even-money post-time favorite and looked sharp in this one. The gelding broke from the 3-post, taking command and seizing a 1/2-length lead by the time he entered the stretch. Jockey Gilbert Ortiz kept The Cazador in front, and he hit the wire first by the same 1/2-length margin.
Michael Zingelmann trains The Cazador, who finished the 220-yard sprint in :11.774, posting a 94 speed index. The win produced an $18,000 payday, pushing the gelding’s total earnings to $243,195.
Rayne Knight owns The Cazador, who now holds 10 wins in 28 lifetime starts, all on the Louisiana Quarter Horse circuit. The Cazador also holds triumphs in the 2019 Flying Breed Stakes and the 2018 Mardi Gras Derby.
Zingelmann and Curtis Crewnwelge bred The Cazador out of winner Told Ya. She has produced 100% money earners from five starters.
JJ Chris S Angel (Jet Black Patriot-JJ Special Tree) was second for Robert Morales. Santiago Riojas Jr. is the trainer and Raul Ramirez Jr. was aboard. Guidry Pride II (Sir Runaway Dash-Guidrys Boodie Doo) took third place under Juan Garcia Jr. for owner Edmundo Juarez Astorga and trainer Wendy Garcia.
The remaining order of finish was Five Bar Fast (Five Bar Cartel-PM Oh Shez Fast), Sheza Rare Stoli (Stoli-Rare Tex Etta), Escandalo (Apollitical Blood- Eying Miss Perry), Hot Prize (Fast Prize Dash-Hot Dare), RF Apolliticalcookie (Apollitical Blood-One Famous Cookie), Eyeondaprize (Fast Prize Jordan- Good Game Meg) and Fixin Too (Azoom Me Too- Deadly Jezabel).
