The photo on page 192 shows AQHA Hall of Fame Jockey Charles Cloyd Smith, aka Choo Choo Charley, after winning the 1972 Go Man Go Handicap at Los Alamitos aboard 1972 World Champion Mr Jet Moore. Charley began his jockey career in 1957, winning a couple of races at the Cen- tennial Racetrack in Colorado before riding in Florida, where he quickly rode his way to the top. After breaking his collarbone in 1958, Charley returned to the track in 1959, winning 45 races that year. Those 45 races put him in the top 10 in the nation. Over the next six years, Charley was the top jockey in the nation while earning 11 riding titles at Los Alamitos. He was the only jockey to ride World Champion Jet Deck, a stallion who broke six track records and won 14 stakes races. In 1963, Smith said, “I have ridden a lot of good horses, but I have never ridden anything that feels like this horse (Jet Deck).”
Before ending his career in 1974, the jockey had won more than 800 races and said, “I’ve had a really good life...I did pretty good. And it’s be- cause of racehorses.”
The 2020 Grade 1 Go Man Go Handicap was won wire-to-wire by Powerful Favorite under Eduardo Nicasio on Aug. 30.
