Laboratory. In 1990, he established Royal Vista Equine with his wife Jill Cook DVM, eventually expanding to include Royal Vista Southwest LLC and Royal Vista Ranches LLC, where they were on the leading edge of embryo transfer technology. Cook was an AQHA Racing committee member and director at large, served on the studbook and registration committee, public policy committee and research committee. He and his wife are members of the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame and were honored by CSU as 2016 Livestock Leaders. Cook was a director
of the Colorado Horsemen’s Association, was the 2009 Colorado Horse Council’s Horseman of the Year and received the 2010 and 2012 Industry Partner Award from CSU Animal Science Department.
MURRAY CRADDOCK
Longtime horse transporter Murray Craddock died in a car accident on May 2. Based in Louisiana, and affectionately called “Driver,” Craddock drove many miles doing what he loved.
JOHN “BODIE” BOATNER CURTIS
John “Bodie” Boatner Curtis passed away on Nov. 13 at the age of 93. Bodie, who was a co- founder of Five Star Chemical Corp., was the owner of several Quarter Horse runners, includ-
ing 2003 Lazy E Futurity-G2 winner Blazen Madie. He was preceded in death by his wife Joy Pauline, and is survived by a daughter, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
RICHARD GAMEZ
Jockey Richard Gamez passed away March 2 after injuries sustained in a fall at Rillito Park on March 1. The Thoroughbred Drama Is Overrated was leading in a maiden stakes when he stumbled and lost his rider. Gamez was transported to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Gamez won 643 Thoroughbred races and earned over $1.2 million, as well as 196 Quarter Horse wins with over $600,000 in earnings, including multiple graded stakes winners.
WARREN GARRELS
Warren Garrels passed away on Mar. 13 at the age of 84. Garrels bred 34 Quarter Horse starters with earnings of $725,000. His top earner is Cartelsbadnews with $193,502 in earnings.
RAY GRAVES
Ray Graves passed away on Aug. 25 in Duncan, Oklahoma. Graves was an American Paint Horse Association leading breeder, owner and trainer. He has been involved in Paint racing for over
50 years, training horses such as 2-time APHA Champion Aze Beduino. Graves formed the Paint Stallion Breeders’ Association, was inducted into the APHA Hall of Fame in 2013, and received the Paul Harber Distinguished Service Award in 2011.
JERRY GREER
Longtime Quarter Horse trainer Jerry Greer passed away in Oklahoma City at the age of 86 on Dec. 21. Greer began training in the mid- 1980’s. He conditioned the earners of nearly $500,000, including 1985 Blue Ribbon Derby- G3 winner Miss Rock N Moon. Greer, who was known for his great sense of humor and kind spirit, is survived by his wife Caroline, a daughter and son, many grandchildren and great-grand- children, and other family members and friends.
BLAINE HADLEY
Utah horseman Blaine Hadley, 85, passed away from pneumonia on March 29. Blaine began his career in the horse industry at 19 years of age. He found success in the rodeo arena, winning the RMRA All-Around Title in 1955 as a calf roper, team roper and bulldogger. The highlight of his career came when he and his family won the 1985 Chariot Racing World Championship. On the flat track, Hadley trained the earners of over $500,000, including Grade 2 Bitterroot Futurity winner Decati.
