                 Subasta Selecta Futurity
JUANITO Y DANNY
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
This futurity is a stellar race for Quarter Horses at the Hipódromo de Las Américas. It is regularly held in September each year, but now took place on Dec. 13, 2020, due to adjustments to the schedule of activities as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Previously on Nov. 27 and 29, trials were held to determine the ten finalists, as well as those going to the consolation race. At that stage, 175 Mexico bred yearlings raised in Mexico and which were presented at the 2019 annual Select Yearling Sale participated in the trials, with 10 trials held each day.
The fastest qualifer with a time of :17.056, Mexican Solo, who is owned by Cuadra Baldeli was scratched in the final, which was therefore held with nine contestants.
Candy Down Eagle was bumped on both sides by DK Avion Cartel and Feuture Horse. Meanwhile, Divas First Anita took advantage of her good start to get to the front of the group until mid-range where she was overtaken, first by Apollo Fly Chantell and then by Juanito
Y Danny and Dance Saqqara. In a beauti-
ful arrival at the finish line, it was the sorrel Juanito Y Danny who showed the greatest power, speed and skillful riding of Leonardo Vidaña who captured first place by 3/4-lengths.
The above-mentioned violators, Feuture Horse and DK Avion Cartel, were disqualified from
sixth to eighth and seventh to ninth place, respectively.
Juanito Y Danny covered the distance in :17.05, improv- ing his qualifying time by .07 hundredths, when he won the ninth race on the second day of trials, under the direction of José Angel Ambrosio Medina.
Due to the health provi-
sions imposed by the pan-
demic, the races were run
without an audience and their
enthusiasm was missed in this
final where the best Mexican-bred Quarter Horse runners appear.
Owned by Rancho El Suspiro, who in 2019 also won this futurity with Rex Sambaso, this year’s winner sold as the highest seller at $1,400,000 pesos (approx. $69,328 US) as it passed through the auction ring. The gelding (Hip #305) was purchased by Dr. Anselmo Aguilar Payán of Cuadra La Presita. Juanito Y Danny is by Danny Cartel and out of Toles by Ought To Be First, making him full brother to Soliath, earner of $163,745 in Mexico win- ner of Mexican Breeders Derby, as well as the Mexico Futurity and Derby and Garañones Derby. He set a track record at 300 yards in :14.90 at the Hipódromo de Las Américas.
He is also a full brother to Juanita Cartel, with earn- ings of more than $30,000.
