Alfonso Patiño Martínez-Aceves Classic
FENOMENAL PARTY
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The classic in memory of Don Alfonso
Patiño Martínez-Aceves, the late breeder and devotee to Quarter Horse racing, was a claiming race for maidens three year olds and older whose owners paid the registration fee for $20,000 pesos (approx. $970) and agreed to be claimed for $100,000 pesos (approx. $4,850). Six horses met such requirements, and the only female was the four-year-old Fenomenal Party.
The distance was 300 yards and the purse to be distributed from first to fourth place reached $195,500 pesos (approx. $9,480).
With all connections complying with the health measures, it was a competition where the delayed exit of Del Patrón (#5) provoked contact with Takin Alamitos (#6) and in the rebound came close to hitting Fenomenal Party (#4). Since Del Patron was not able to pass between the two horses, his rider directed him towards the right side of the track leaving him with no chance of winning. Very close to the inner rail, Cummin Unwood (#1) was racing at the head of the group, but halfway over the course he succumbed to the speed of PR Track Master (#2), who, in the end, was outrun by Fenomenal Party, who crossed
the finish line a head in front in :15.63 while running into a significant headwind.
Fenomenal Party (Southern Corona-Party Wave) was ridden by Alejandro Gómez Díaz, who led her to score the first classic in her career and her fourth victory in 17 starts at the track.
She was bred by José
Francisco García Campos and
owned by Granja La Esperanza, who acquired her on March 15, 2020, in a claiming race for $80,000 pesos (approx. $3,880).
Due to the health restrictions imposed
by the COVID 19 pandemic, the winning team was represented only by trainer Gregorio Alberto Razo Parra and rider Alejandro Gómez Díaz, who received the awards from Adriana Gómez Barnola and José Mauricio Dorantes.
PR Track Master (Swingin Jess-Lady Natova) finished second under José Angel Ambrosio Medina for owner Cuadra
Chiconcuac and trainer Luis Eduardo
Flores Gómez.
In third place was
the 9-year-old Cummin Unwood (Mr Eye Opener- Shesaspeedin Bullet) with Rosalino Alcudia on board for owner Cuadra Moreno Racing and trainer Gregorio Alberto Razo Parra.
Takin Alamitos (Takin On Spoon Man-Bubbles First
Dash), Freeze In The Breeze (Feature This Cold-This Chicks Breezin), and Del Patrón (Giorgino-Jess A Blue Girl) completed the order of finish.
