When it comes to naming the new foals each year, the breeder often has to use some creativity in naming the next generation. It used to be easy when a horse like Three Bars came on the scene; they just put a name in front of Bars or a name behind Bars to name many of his colts. Thus, the Bar era began. But as we have gone on, the naming of foals has gotten harder. Like Three Bars, one of the tried-and-true naming systems has come from using names that are associated with the name of the sire and/or the dam.
Our case in point is Whistle Stop Cafe, the 2020 AQHA World Champion. When
we look at her pedigree, we see her sire is Freighttrain B and we go hmmm! That must
mean she was named as a spinoff of her sire’s name with “whistle stop” coming from
the language of the railroad. Well, that may be true, but then you talk to those
involved in her early life and you find a different reason for her name. She was named for the famous book Fried Green
Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café by Fannie Flagg. The book became a
famous movie - Fried Green Tomatoes with Jessica Tandy, Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker. Now we understand where her name comes from. So, let’s take a look
back at where she came from and add a little that we didn’t cover when she won the 2020 All American Futurity, and that will take us to how her female line got its start.
Whistle Stop Cafe was purchased by Lainie and Raymond Whitmire of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, at the 2019 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. Lainie and Raymond Whitmire are well known in the cutting and barrel racing industries. They have been very active as cutting enthusiasts, forming the World Cutting Horse Association as a place for weekend and amateur cutters to develop
their skills. They are barrel racing enthusiasts who have made a major investment in that industry. They own and stand Bullseye Bullion, a barrel racing money earner of $60,000 that competed in the AQHA as well as various barrel futurities, derbies and as a pro rodeo performer. They bought JL Dash Ta Heaven for $1.7 million in 2020. He is a barrel racer with earnings of over $208,087 and he is the sire of horses that have won over $2 million in barrel racing.
A recent conversation with Ray Whitmire gives us some insight into their recent move into quarter racing and how his interest in Quarter Horse racing wasn’t new. “I got started in racing in about 1975. I was in it for a while then out for a while and then
Whistle Stop Cafe’s trainer for all six of her starts, Blane Wood.
“We had Whistle Stop Cafe marked in the catalog and we liked her breeding. Blane Wood was there, and we had him look at her and he liked her. Turned out to be a really good purchase. We only paid $42,000 for her.”
