California and Arizona collaborated on Tell Cartel, who was voted Champion 3 Year Old and Champion 3-Year-Old Colt. Martha Wells bred Tell Cartel in California, while Matt Fales of Arizona trained him. And now the colt heads to Fales Ranch in Arizona for stud duty.
“It was a dream that I never could dream of,” said Wells at the awards ceremony.
Not only did Tell Cartel pick up two titles, Wells was named Champion Owner. She thanked Matt, as well as his parents, Ralph and Carrie, who “took me in under their wing” after her husband, Dwayne, died in 1996. “We work together, and we are a family,” said Wells.
Wells’ son Dan pointed out that his mother has been in the horse business for 49 years.
“After they’re weaned, I take them back to my house and that’s when I can handle them every day,” said Wells, known to her friends as Mimi. “When we started breaking Tell Cartel, he just never did anything wrong. He is the sweetest horse in the whole world.”
Graded stakes-placed at two, Tell Cartel began 2020 in February by capturing the Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1 by 3/4-lengths. He followed that with a 1 3/4-length score in the El Primero Del Ano Derby-G3.
“He floated over the track tonight,” Matt Fales said after the El Primero Del Ano Derby. “It’s amazing that I have a superstar on my hands. I want to embrace every moment of it.”
Many times 3 year olds do well in the early derbies at Los Alamitos, but don’t hold their form through the year. Not Tell Cartel. He ended the year with another derby, this time the Nov. 8
Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1. Despite a bump at the start, he was drawing off at the finish, his winning margin a 1/2-length.
Tell Cartel took on older horses in the Dec. 12 Champion of Champions-G1. After several bumps early on through much of the field, seven horses came to the wire virtually together. Tell Cartel beat them all except 4-year-old Apollitical Pence, finishing second by just a neck.
