  SHAME ON READ
Shame On Read, a homebred son of Shame On Charlie owned by Glenn Berry and Linda Berry, broke his maiden in the May 4, $149,352 Copper Top Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-old Thoroughbreds at Sunland Park.
Ridden by Elvin Gonzalez and sent to post as the 2-1 favorite in a field of eight, Shame On Read led at every call and covered 4 1/2 furlongs in :52.20, and his margin
of victory was a clear three lengths from Dancinstardustlady. Dallas Barton prepped the dark bay or brown gelding.
Shame On Read made his debut with a third-place finish in his Copper Top Futurity trial on April 14. The gelding became the third black-type stakes winner from just 12 starters sired by Shame On Charlie, a winning 15-year- old son of 1998 Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Indian Charlie.
A ’04 Kentucky-bred foal and full brother to dual champion filly Indian Blessing, Shame On Charlie has sired the earners of more than $499,000 million from four crops, including 2015 C.O. “Ken” Kendrick Memorial Stakes (R) winner Shug’s Hope. The stallion is owned by Barbara J. Brown and stands at Chaparral Farms in Hobbs, New Mexico.
Shame On Read is the first starter foaled by his dam, Courageous Cara, an unraced
Texas-bred 7-year-old daughter of the A.P. Indy stallion Waki Indy. His second dam, the win- ning California-bred Olympio mare Bold Cara, ran second in the ‘’07 West Mesa Handicap for distaffers at Albuquerque Downs.
Shame On Read’s third dam, the winning Mighty Courageous mare Courageous Ashley, ran third in the 1995 Yakima Oaks Stakes
at Yakima Meadows in Washington and was
a half-sister to Casey’s Whiff, the winner of
the ’89 Mike Donahoe Memorial Stakes at Longacres Racecourse near Seattle. The gelding traces back to his fourth dam, Ashly Whiffet,
a winning daughter of the Hoist The Flag stallion Flag Officer and a half-sister to stakes winner Anxious Arrival.
The $74,677 winner’s share of the Copper Top Futurity purse pushed Shame On Read’s earnings to $75,567. The gelding returned a $6-win mutuel and teamed with runner-up Dancinstardustlady, the 6-1 fifth choice in
the wagering, for a $2 exacta payoff of $33.40. Stormin Fast, a 14-1 longshot, ran third, 4 1/4 lengths behind Shame On Read, to complete a $149.60 ($1) trifecta dividend.
Wiskey Crown finished fourth, 5 1/4 lengths behind the winner, and was followed by Tellingly, Jim Edd Who, West Dawn,
and Iced. Two Copper Top finalists -- Go
Now Go and Spec -- were listed by Equibase charts as trainer scratches.
Dancinstardustlady is a gray or roan daughter of the Unbridled’s Song stal-
lion Right Rigger campaigned by Eduardo P. Mendoza, who acquired the filly for $8,700 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred
Sale at Ruidoso Downs. A full sister to stakes winners Rig Time and Dust Alert, Dancinstardustlady was coming off of a sec- ond place run in her Copper Top trial. She has banked $33,701 from three outs.
Stormin Fast pocketed the $17,922 third- place share of the purse for races for owner Dale F. Taylor Racing LLC. A homebred Attila’s Storm gelding Stormin Fast has earned $18,812 from two starts.
