Jocky Ruben Lozano and trainer Valentin Zamudio after their Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 win
“He got a little nervous when the horse to the inside started acting up,” said Lozano. “The field was already in the gate, and my horse started getting anxious. At the very last moment, he settled down, and then when they opened the gate, we took off.”
Golden Boi came out straight while Chizum to his immediate outside ducked out. That didn’t faze Golden Boi, who came on strongly to grab the lead at the top of the stretch and win by 1-length in a time of :17.431 for 350 yards.
“I was right there with the leaders,” said Lozano. “I felt a horse to my inside putting pressure. After about 200 yards, we started pulling away. We had it from that point on.”
Zamudio said that Golden Boi is great to train and good around the barn.
“I think he will do fine at 400 yards,” said the trainer. “Each time we have sent him to the track, he has gotten better and better. We brought him along with that focal point in mind. We wanted to take him from less to more. He’s the best horse I’ve ever trained.”
It was a great Father’s Day for Zamudio.
“My son plays baseball, and he hit a home run this morning, and now I win this race,” Zamudio said. “What else can I ask from life? My beautiful family is here, root- ing me on.”
Lozano was also pleased that his parents were at Los Alamitos to see him win such a big race on Father’s Day.
“I’ve never celebrated a win of this mag- nitude,” said the jockey. “To do it with my parents here—I can’t tell you how much this means to me.”
M & G Farms Inc. is based in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and has been racing horses since 2011. M & G bred Golden Boi in California from Logans Dash, one of its first racehorses. She won the 2012 Three Cherries Stakes, Biscayne Stakes, and Miami-Dade County Stakes as well as the 2013 Delta Dash Stakes. The mare has produced two winners from three starters, including Logans Favorite, who fin- ished second in the 2019 Mile High Derby.
“We came about two years ago this month to meet Golden Boi,” said Montano. “I saw him and he was just this little horse. I see him now winning this big horse race. It is insane.
“I think we all had a good feeling about this horse,” she added. “From the start
we all felt super confident. It was a great outcome tonight. It felt like a dream. Just getting to live this with my family, it’s the biggest blessing I could ever ask for.”
