Ruidoso Futurity-G1
JESS SAVIN CANDY
by Tracy Gantz
James Streelman and William O. Dale, partners in Dutch Masters III, were not planning to buy a colt at the 2020 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. Dale raises and sells his own horses in Missouri, only keeping an occasional filly to race and subsequently breed, while the pandemic kept Streelman at home in California for that sale.
Nevertheless, the right circumstances came about for them to purchase Jess Savin Candy, who won the $1,000,000 Ruidoso Futurity-G1 for them on June 13.
Lazy E Ranch LLC consigned Jess Savin Candy to the sale as agent for breeders Jim and Donna O’Neal. Butch Wise of Lazy E sought out Dale about the youngster.
“Butch came to Bill and said, ‘I’ve got to show you this colt—I really think he’ll be a Ruidoso-type horse,’ ” Streelman recalled. “Bill called me and I said, ‘What do you think?’ He gave me his opinion, and I said, ‘Well, send me some pictures.’ ”
