University of Louisville Offers Online
Horse Industry Program
The Equine Industry Program at the University of Louisville’s College of Business will offer an online only Horse Racing Industry Business Certificate focusing on building successful ca- reers in the horse racing industry. The in-depth program looks at challenges facing the industry and innovative approaches required to solve them. The graduate level certificate is comprised of six courses that run five weeks each, with credits applicable toward completion of an MBA. The 9-credit-hour certificate will offer three courses in the fall of 2021 and six in the spring of 2022, and will provide the opportuni- ty for internships, field experience and contacts with prominent industry professionals in the horse country of Kentucky. UC-Davis Pauses Genetic Testing To Recalibrate
The University of California-Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory will temporarily pause genetic testing from July 5-9 for operation re- calibration to address equipment maintenance. As a result, AQHA customers will see a delay in processing of any required genetic testing. Ad- ditionally, results from the week of June 28 may also see delays.
Louisiana Sports Gambling Passes
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards in early June signed the first of three bills to create sports gambling in the state, and state lawmak- ers passed the other two bills on June 10. The 55 parishes that favored sports gambling will allow betting in-person or online to allow bars and restaurants to have kiosks similar to video poker machines, and off-track horse racing betting parlors will allow electronic gambling machines to place wagers. The state will collect a 10% tax from the companies offering in-person gambling, while online gaming companies will face a 15% tax, with 60% of the money going to the state’s general fund, 25% to Early Child- hood Education Fund, 12% to the parishes where the funds were collected, a minimum of $500,000 to Behavioral Health and Wellness Fund, and 2% to the Disability Affairs Trust Fund. Supporters say it will benefit the horse racing industry.
Purses Increases At Indiana Grand
Indiana Grand Racing & Casino announced purse increases for Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racing effective July 6, with 10% added to all Thoroughbred overnights and an approximate 6% increase to Quarter Horse overnights and trials. “This boost is a direct result of elevated business levels that continue to be strong this year,” said Vice President and General Manager of Racing Eric Halstrom.
Peterson Joins IHRC As Equine Medical Director Dr. Kerry Peterson DVM is the new Equine Medical Director for the Indiana Horse Racing Commission (IHRC). Peterson brings over 15 years’ experience to the position, including as Director of Animal Health Programs for the Indiana State Board of Animal Health. Most recently, she served as the Medical Director and Veterinarian of Pet Wellness Clinics with nine locations in central Indiana. Peterson will provide oversight for all Commission related veterinary and equine health needs, including testing procedures, compliance, enforcement of regulations, and developing new programs af- fecting equine welfare.
Louisiana Downs Charity Golf Tournament
Louisiana Downs will hold their annual Charity Golf Tournament at Northwood Hills Golf Club in Shreveport on Sept. 1. The event
will benefit The Winner’s Circle Church and Chaplain Jimmy Sistrunk for their many programs to assist the Louisiana Downs racing community and backstretch workers. Deadline to enter is Aug. 25, with an event fee of $80
per person or $320 per four-person team and includes green fees, golf cart, lunch and Super Derby t-shirt/cap, with trophies presented to the first, second and third place teams. “Each year, this event raises valuable funds and provides a wonderful outing away from the everyday duties of the racetrack. Terry Albracht Passes Away
Longtime horseman Terrance Wayne “Terry” Albracht, 71, passed away on June 13 at his home in Springtown, Texas. Terry began his career in the insurance business in the early 1970’s. As the owner of Albracht Insurance Agency LLP, Terry moved to equine and farm and ranch insurance in 1985 and insured many leading runners. He owned horses himself and competed with roping
