With a purse of $294,075, the Grade 1 Speed- horse Graham Futurity went down in the record books as the richest race ever contested in the his- tory of Paint and Appaloosa racing.
On May 29, all eyes were on Smithworks and RF Livies Livewire who spent the season dueling in stakes races at Remington Park leading up to the firstactoftheSpeedhorseTripleCrownseries.
It was also game on for the two Paint train- ers with the most lifetime wins. Dee Keener, who trains RF Livies Livewire, went into the race with 334 victories. Matt Whitekiller, with Smithworks under his wing, had notched 332.
At the end of the day, Smithworks burned up the track over 350 yards to win for owner Bryan Hawk of Shawnee, Oklahoma, trainer Whitekiller and jockey Cody Smith. It was the fifth time Whi- tekiller, and Smith combined forces to win this stakes race. The duo’s past winners include DTL Chasin Tale (2019), Bully Pulpit (2017), Painted Turnpike (2015) and I Kick (2009).
The second round of the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown begins with Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity trials to be held
July 10, with the finals on July 24.
