Championship at Sunland Park-G1
ZOOMIN EFFORTLESSLY
by Tracy Gantz
Defeating a World Champion takes tal- ent, courage, and maybe just a bit of good luck. All came together for Zoomin
Effortlessly in the Championship at Sunland Park on Jan. 3.
The race was originally scheduled to close out 2015 on Dec. 27. However, a severe snowstorm moving through the area caused the cancellation of the Dec. 27 card, and
the Championship was rescheduled for the following Sunday, with the original draw for post positions standing.
JRC Callas First, the World Champion of 2014, went off as the even-money favorite in the field of 10. He and Zoomin Effortlessly both brought impressive winning streaks into the race, and bettors made Zoomin Effortlessly the 4-1 second choice over multiple stakes win- ner Mad About The Moon.
When the gate opened for the 400-
yard Championship, long shot Wagon Full Of Gold rocketed to the lead. Zoomin Effortlessly, just to that rival’s outside in post three, was right there in second under jockey Santos Carrizales.
Zoomin Effortlessly and Carrizales quickly overtook Wagon Full Of Gold, but JRC Callas First mounted a late rally that nearly carried him to vic- tory. Zoomin Effortlessly held off the Champion by a neck in :19.349 while earning a 91 speed index.
Edelmiro Carrizales trains Zoomin Effortlessly for owner Telesforo Perrett. The trainer claimed the gelding for $10,000 in late 2014.
It was money well spent, as Zoomin Effortlessly earned $157,000 in this Championship alone and boosted his earnings to a total of $280,401.
During 2015, the gelding put together a five-race win streak that began with an allowance victory in May at Sam Houston Race Park.
Moving on to Retama Park, he won the TQHA Sires Cup Stakes, where he set a New Track Record of :19.493 for 400 yards. He then won the TQHA Classic Stakes and Live Oak Handicap at Retama Park. At Lone Star Park, he added the Refrigerator Handicap.
Tommy Charbula bred Zoomin Effortlessly in Texas and began racing him at two years of age in 2013. The breeder won three races with him.
Earning the title of Texas Hi-Point Claiming Horse in 2014, Zoomin Effortlessly is one of two starters from Royal Quick Affair. The mare’s other
starter was a two year old of
2015. Effortless Love, the
second dam, has produced
stakes-placed Chocolate
Cartel and Coup De Love.
Damian Martinez rode
second-place finisher JRC
Callas First (Winners Award-
Calla Missy Jane) for trainer
Brian Stroud, who co-owns
him with his wife, Dana.
JRC Callas First took a
four-stakes win streak into
the Grade 1 Championship
at Sunland Park, beginning the run with
a victory in the Tower of the Americas Handicap and following that with the TQHA 550 Stakes, the Downs at Albuquerque
Fall Championship, and then the Zia Park Championship.
Dashin For A Prize (Heza Fast Dash-Fast Prize Angie) finished third, just as he did in the Zia Park Championship. His recent stakes-
placings include a second in the 2015 All American Gold Cup. Esgar Ramirez rode the 4-year-old gelding in the Championship at Sunland Park for trainer Mario Loza and owner Oscar Moreno.
Completing the field
were Jess Featureme Quick (Feature Mr Jess-One
Quick Cookie), Alis Jumpn (Jumpn-Gloria In Red), GRC Justplainazoom (Azoom- Luisas Plain Jain), Eagle On The Fly (One Famous Eagle- Gold), Wagon Full Of Gold
