“If it wasn’t for Dutch digging in here on this farm, we wouldn’t be having this conversation today. So, he needs to get a lot of credit for it and the whole family’s contribution is important, too!” - J.E. Jumonville Jr.
was the trainer for Tailor Fit. The 2002 racing year for Jess Louisiana Blue ended with his earning the title of AQHA Champion Aged Stallion.
The road to being a stallion didn’t start good for Jess Louisiana Blue as he was a shy breeder with low libido, but his semen was good. They tried different breeding farms and then brought him home to Louisiana. Here is what J. E. tells us about what happened next. “I called Mr. Landry, who had retired, and told him the problem and he said, ‘Send the horse over here and I will work with him.’ We bred 40 some mares that year. Mr. Landry retired again.
“Mr. Landry said he would send the horse back to us, but I didn’t know if I could handle
it myself,” J.E. continued. “So, I sat with Dutch, and he had never collected a horse before. If we are going to stand our horse, we will have to collect him or send him out of state. Do you want to try? And he said yes. That day, I picked up the phone
and called Dr. Glenn Blodgett at the Four Sixes. It was in October, and I told him the story. I asked, ‘If you wouldn’t mind, could you help Dutch learn how to collect these horses?’ He said, ‘December first, you send the horse and Dutch up here to me.’ They stayed for two weeks, and he had Dutch collecting on every horse before he left. Dutch never missed a collection day in that horse’s life.”
He continued about the role Dutch played in keeping the program going, “If it wasn’t
for Dutch digging in here on this farm, we wouldn’t be having this conversation today. So, he needs to get a lot of credit for it and the whole family’s contribution is important, too!”
Jess Louisiana Blue sired money earners of over $25 million with over 100 stakes horses and 56 stakes winners including five horses that have earned over $400,000 - they are Jessa Louisiana Zoom, Louisiana Senator, Lifeinthefastlanes, Jess A Saint and Blue Louisiana Jolla. The daughters of Jess Louisiana Blue have produced foals that have earned over $5.6 million, including Queen
Washita, winner of the Oklahoma Derby-G3 and Evangeline Downs Futurity.
The AQHA bestowed the AQHA Legacy Award for breeding horses for 50 consecutive years to J. E and his Jumonville Farms in 2015. This is an award that J. E. dearly cherishes. The legacy award represents 50 years of owning and breeding horses that earned accolades as Champions, major stakes winners, and leading sires and dams that have contributed to the racing industry. J. E. is the breeder of horses that have earned over $8 million in his name and in partnership with others.
When Jess Louisiana Blue joined Feature Mr Jess and J. E. in the LQHBA Hall of Fame,
it brought into focus the achievements of J. E Jumonville Jr. and Jumonville Farms. J. E. strongly believes that this honor represents the dedication of the Jumonville Family with his loving wife Bunny, the boys J.E. “Tres” III, Dutcher, and Clayton, and their families with their hard work to keep the program going. As J. E. simply puts it, they have been “very blessed” to have continued through everything they have been through, the good and the hard times. And now Feature Mr Jess and Jess Louisiana Blue have added this new milestone as important sires from Jumonville Farm with each siring foals that have earned over $25 million. And you can still breed to them.
