Crazy Down Corona has proven herself to be a cut above the rest. Having produced not one, but two offspring that have achieved remarkable success at the highest levels of competition and been named Champions, Crazy Down Corona has cemented her name in the record books as the Speedhorse 2022 Broodmare of the Year.
Bred in Oklahoma by Steve A. Holt and owned in partnership by Holt and Jeff D. Jones, Crazy Down Corona acquitted herself well enough on the racetrack. She qualified for the 2010 Heritage Place Futurity-G1 at Remington Park and captured an allowance race enroute
to a career bankroll of $73,162, while finishing first or second in three of six lifetime starts.
title, Crazy Down Corona has earned the honor of being named an AQHA Dam of Distinction, an award that recognizes the accomplishments of racing broodmares. While the talent was obviously there to be a competitive racehorse, Crazy Down Corona has shined brightest when it comes to passing on her genetic traits in the breeding shed.
A 2008 sorrel mare by First Down Dash and out of the Corona Cartel mare Crazy About Corona, Crazy Down Corona has produced five winners from eight starters, including a pair of Champions in Empressum SI 111, and Hes Judgeandjury SI 98 — both Champions in 2022. Hes Judgeandjury was her top earner of the season and the leading money
year on the racetrack. In addition to her pair of Champions, Crazy Down Corona was also represented by stakes-placed Lotas First SI 90, and stakes-placed Cartel Envy SI 88.
Empressum, bred and owned by Jones and Holt, set the racing world afire in 2022. Honored as that season’s World Champion, as well as Champion Aged Gelding and Champion Aged Horse, Empressum was also the 2021 Champion Three Year Old and Champion Three-Year-Old Gelding. The son of Apollitical Jess finished first or second in all six starts at four in 2022, banking $587,896 for his connections. Trained by Heath Taylor, Empressum won his Vessels Maturity-G1 trial and then won the final by nearly 2-lengths in a dominating effort.
In addition to her Broodmare of the Year title, Crazy Down Corona has earned the honor of being named an AQHA Dam of Distinction, an award that recognizes the accomplishments of racing broodmares.
