W hen some of the biggest names in the Quarter Horse racing
industry all gravitate to the same
horse, you can bet that horse is something special. That’s what happened with
Walk Thru Fire, who generated interest from the time he first appeared at the Vessels/Schvaneveldt Yearling Sale in 1998. Consigned by breeders Allred Bros. and Vessels Stallion Farm LLC, Walk Thru Fire was purchased by legendary Thoroughbred trainer D. Wayne Lukas, Farish and Gaylord for $270,000. They ran the colt for two seasons, then consigned him to the Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale. Trainer Jaime Gomez, agent, tagged him for $100,000 and ran him briefly before Walk Thru Fire retired to stud at Edward Allred’s Rolling A Ranch in Atascardeo, California.
While he had failed to live up to high expectations on the racetrack, Walk Thru Fire’s pedigree still appealed to knowledgeable horsemen. Some of California’s leading breeders gave the stallion a try, including Dutch Masters III, which booked winner and Grade 1 finalist Higher Math and winner Ya Tey Hay to Walk Thru Fire.
In the meantime, Walk Thru Fire showed up on AQHA Past President J. D. Blondin’s radar, and the colt moved to Moon Lake Equine Center. Battling fertility troubles while in Louisiana, Walk Thru Fire sired small crops for the next few years until his oldest foals hit the racetrack with a splash in 2005.
From his first crop, Higher Math’s foal, Higher Fire, was 2005’s High Money Earning Horse, as well as the Champion 2-Year-Old and Champion

2-Year-Old Filly, while Ya Tey Hay’s foal, Gold Nugget Rd, won the Kindergarten Futurity-G1. Walk Thru Fire was the Leading Freshman Sire of Money Earners and 2-Year-Old Money Earners, and the Second Leading Sire of 2-Year-Old Money Earners behind only Corona Cartel.
Leading breeders Ed Allred and Mike Abraham were so impressed they bought the stallion and syndicated him for $10 million, returning him to California to stand at
Burns Ranch. With any questionable fertility issues behind him, Walk Thru Fire’s stallion career exploded. In 2009 he was awarded the PCQHRA’s Three Bars Award for outstanding California stallion. In 2010, his second champion—Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Pink Boots RM—blazed down the racetrack. And in 2011, Separate Fire became Walk Thru Fire’s third champion as the Champion 2-Year-Old Filly. As impressive as his champions are, Walk Thru Fire consistently leads the sire rankings with a high percentage of winners to starters.
The strength of this maternal family continues to shine, as Walk Thru Fire’s full sister, One Sweet Dash, was represented on the racetrack in 2012 by One Dashing Eagle, who became the first racing American Quarter Horse to earn over $2 million in a single season.
It all adds up to a story book ending for Walk Thru Fire, who lived up to the faith placed in him by some of the industry’s giants. The best part is Walk Thru Fire’s story is far from finished, as the 16-year-old stallion has many more years of siring stakes winners still ahead of him.
