No filly or mare finished ahead of Quirky in 2015. She demolished the competition against her own sex, earning her the title of Champion Aged Mare.
Jimmy Glenn Jr. trains Quirky for owner- breeder Ed Allred, and he has spent plenty of time figuring out her quirks.
“She’s a finicky filly,” said Glenn. “She has trouble keeping weight, but we trick her into eating more. We only give her a little bit of grain at first and that gets her eating going.”
Quirky has also matured, which helped her put together such a good 4-year-old season in 2015.
She began the year the same way she has already started 2016—with a victory in the Charger Bar Handicap, a Grade 2 race in 2015 and upgraded to Grade 1 for 2016. Quirky next competed in the Ivan Ashment Handicap, and despite having to make up ground after breaking fourth, she came home 3/4-length on top for regular rider Carlos Huerta.
“She’s just too strong right now,” said Huerta.
Bettors sent Quirky off as the heavy 3-10 favorite in the California Breeders’ Matron Stakes-RG3, and she didn’t disappoint them. She demolished her fellow California-breds by 1 3/4-lengths.
Quirky stepped into Grade 1 company for the Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap and went off at 3-10 again. Her rivals didn’t stand
a chance, as she posted a 1/2-length triumph despite lugging in.
“She’s matured a lot,” said Glenn. “She used to be this thin, little filly. But now she’s packing about 80 more pounds of muscle than last year.”
The Vessels earned Quirky a berth in the Champion of Champions-G1 against males. That was the only time Quirky lost, as she ran sixth, but it took the likes of Champions Heza Dasha Fire and Moonist to beat her.
Allred bred Quirky by crossing Dont Pass Bar, a daughter of stakes-placed Ynot Bar, to the stallion Stel Corona. He pulled embryos from Quirky last year and said he plans to do the same in 2016. That means that she could return to Los Alamitos to work on earning another Championship.
